President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of 510 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) to assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) under Operation Prosper.
The temporary deployment comes in response to recent outbreaks of public violence and planned anti-immigrant marches sparked by a widespread campaign of misinformation.
Ramaphosa noted that the SANDF will be on standby to support the police for “any eventuality that may occur”.
The intervention is legally grounded under Section 201(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, which empowers the President to deploy the military to cooperate with the police service when internal stability is threatened.
The deployment is for the period from October 9 until November 30.
The expected expenditure for the seven-week operation is projected at R34 082 720.
In compliance with constitutional obligations, the President formally notified National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces chairperson Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane via correspondence.
