The Public Servants Association (PSA) has officially called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently extend the lifespan and broaden the mandate of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The public service union stated that this expansion is vital to ensure the commission can thoroughly investigate all relevant evidence emerging from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
Ramaphosa on Monday stated that he is open to extending the Commission of Inquiry if commissioners formally request more time.
The union expressed deep concern regarding the rising volume of serious allegations within key law-enforcement and criminal justice bodies.
The PSA highlighted that a full year has passed since KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations about corruption within the SAPS. Despite the establishment of the Madlanga Commission, the union notes that meaningful reforms and accountability remain painfully slow.
Compounding these existing worries are recent, serious allegations made by senior officials within the DCS against the National Commissioner.
The PSA believes these claims raise fundamental questions about governance, ethical leadership, and accountability.
While the union emphasises that these allegations are not yet findings of fact, it argues they are serious enough to warrant a comprehensive, transparent, and independent investigation.
The PSA advocates a single, comprehensive inquiry rather than fragmented investigations. According to the union, this approach will promote transparency, strengthen public confidence, provide a complete factual record and protect innocent officials by publicly vindicating them if claims lack merit.
Additionally, the PSA urged the National Prosecuting Authority, the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to conclude their investigations without delay.
The ongoing uncertainty and slow pace of accountability are taking a severe toll on institutional morale. Thousands of honest public servants continue to perform their constitutional duties under extremely difficult circumstances.
The PSA remains steadfast in its commitment to clean governance, asserting that extending the Madlanga Commission will signal the government's true commitment to uncovering the truth and restoring the rule of law.
