The Public Servants Association (PSA) applauds the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for introducing a new accommodation support system that eliminates intermediaries and pays accredited service providers directly. This reform addresses long-standing inefficiencies and ensures students receive timely, secure housing.
Under the new framework, students can apply for and track accommodation through an upgraded NSFAS portal, while academic calendars will align with move-in and move-out dates to prevent disruptions. These changes follow previous concerns about financial mismanagement and irregular appointments of service providers. Cutting out the middleman is a necessary step toward accountability and efficiency. This reform directly benefits students, many of whom previously experienced uncertainty and hardship due to payment delays or inflated administrative fees.
The PSA also recognises the importance of NSFAS’s accreditation of participating providers, which helps ensure safety, affordability, and quality living conditions for students. The PSA urges the NSFAS to maintain transparency and accountability through regular audits and stakeholder engagement. This overhaul is a positive step toward improving student welfare and restoring confidence in public funding systems.
