The Public Servants Association (PSA) calls on the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and the National Treasury to act without delay to ensure the immediate and adequate funding of the Madlanga Commission, which has reportedly exhausted its financial resources.
It is deeply concerning that a Commission of such critical national importance now faces operational termination owing to a lack of funding. The PSA asserts that this situation undermines the direct fight against corruption and weakens public confidence in the state’s commitment to accountability and clean governance.
The Madlanga Commission has distinguished itself as one of the few investigative bodies demonstrating tangible progress in exposing corruption within government institutions, as well as uncovering widespread maladministration. Its work has not only brought critical issues to light but has also contributed to concrete outcomes, including arrests and the strengthening of accountability mechanisms.
From a labour and public service perspective, corruption and maladministration directly erodes the integrity of public institutions, compromises service delivery, and negatively affects the working conditions of public servants. The PSA therefore views the continued functioning of the Commission as essential to safeguarding both ethical governance and the interests of its members.
The PSA applauds the work undertaken by the Madlanga Commission thus far. Its efforts represent a meaningful step towards restoring public trust and ensuring that those implicated in wrongdoing are held accountable.
The PSA firmly urges the President, National Treasury and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, to prioritise the immediate allocation of sufficient funding to enable the Commission to continue its work without interruption.
Madlanga has proven to be very effective in the fight against corruption with tangible results, the halting of the Madlanga Commission owing to funding will certainly dent the public’s confidence and the ability to deal with corruption.
The PSA will continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and the protection of public resources in the interest of all South Africans.
