As the country prepares to celebrate Heritage Day, Proudly South African (Proudly SA) is calling on the nation to use the day to celebrate the cultural wealth of the country and to embrace and foster a greater sense of ‘unity in diversity’.

“We encourage all South Africans to enjoy the day by celebrating the many diverse and rich cultures that make up our nation. Heritage Day is about more than just having a braai – it’s about embracing our living heritage which impacts deeply on our sense of identity as South Africans,” said Proudly SA’s CEO, Adv. Leslie Sedibe.

In line with the Department of Arts and Culture’s efforts to promote and safeguard living heritage, Proudly SA encourages the nation to embrace and explore the various cultural traditions which richly add to the tapestry of South African society.

“When we embrace and foster a deeper understanding of each other’s traditions, oral history and other aspects which make up living heritage, we really show respect for something that is sacred to our fellow South Africans. This can play an integral role in promoting reconciliation, social cohesion and national unity,” added Adv. Sedibe.

Proudly SA is calling on all South Africans to use Heritage Day as a catalyst to create a sense of respect for one another, a citizenry who cares and a people who share a deep love for the same country.

“Let’s continue to build a nation that embraces and practices the philosophy of Ubuntu and that shares a common love for our country, flag, national symbols and each other. Let’s use Heritage Day to rediscover a sense of pride and unity in our diversity. Let’s be proudly South African and show our love for this country by buying products made in South Africa, concluded Adv. Sedibe.
