The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has confirmed that petrol and diesel prices will decrease significantly from July 1, despite the phasing out of the short-term fuel levy relief implemented in recent months.

Petrol 93 will decrease by R2.01 a litre and Petrol 95 by R1.96 a litre, while diesel (0.05% sulphur) will decrease by R3.14 a litre and diesel (0.005% sulphur) by R3.59 a litre.

The DMPR notes that the short-term relief measures have been completely phased out and the full fuel levies of R4.29 a litre on petrol and R4.16 a litre on diesel will be reinstated from July 1.

During the review period, the average Brent crude oil price decreased from $104.95/bl to $85.53/bl, as a result of the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to end the conflict in the Middle East, which impacted on the transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Further, the rand appreciated, on average, against the dollar, from R16.52 to R16.38.
