Aerospace and technology company Paramount South Africa has confirmed the deployment of its advanced border security technologies in support of the Border Management Authority (BMA) at the Lebombo border post, in Mpumalanga, as part of a coordinated effort to enhance border security during the busy Easter holiday period.

South Africa’s borders face a complex and evolving set of challenges, including illegal crossings, human trafficking, smuggling of contraband and other forms of transnational crime, and these risks are often intensified during peak travel periods, placing increased pressure on border control infrastructure and personnel.

In response, the BMA has intensified operations at key border points, including Lebombo, which is one of the country’s busiest land ports.

Strategically located in Mpumalanga along the N4 corridor, the Lebombo border post connects South Africa and Mozambique and serves as a critical gateway for both passenger and commercial traffic.

It facilitates the legitimate movement of people and goods for tourism, trade, employment and other economic activities, while also being vulnerable to criminal exploitation owing to its high traffic volumes and proximity to key regional nodes, including the Kruger National Park and Mbombela, in South Africa, and Maputo, in Mozambique.

As part of this operation, Paramount has deployed three Maatla armoured border patrol vehicles – specifically designed for rugged terrain and high-threat environments, alongside its Vulture VTOL unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

The Vulture drones are deployed to conduct persistent aerial surveillance, detecting illegal crossings, suspicious movements, and smuggling activities along the borderline, particularly in remote areas and during night operations.

Once a potential threat is identified from the air, the Maatla vehicles are mobilised to enable rapid response by BMA ground teams, who carry out apprehensions and arrests. These teams are equipped with body-worn cameras provided by Paramount to ensure real-time communication, enhanced coordination and full operational visibility.

The live-streaming feeds from the body cameras are integrated with the drone surveillance systems and vehicle platforms. This allows operators to receive real-time visuals and precise coordinates of both suspected threats and deployed ground teams, significantly enhancing situational awareness, decision-making and operational effectiveness.

This integrated deployment forms part of Paramount’s comprehensive border security solution, which combines advanced mobility platforms, intelligent aerial surveillance and command-and-control fusion capabilities.

By seamlessly linking drones, vehicles and personnel through real-time data and communications, the solution delivers a layered and highly responsive approach to border security.

Early operational feedback indicates that the deployed systems have already contributed to the successful detection and apprehension of individuals attempting illegal crossings, as well as the interception of contraband.

“We are honoured to support the BMA in its critical mission to safeguard South Africa’s borders. The leadership shown by the BMA in proactively strengthening border operations during high-risk periods such as Easter is commendable.

“This deployment not only demonstrates the value of advanced, integrated technologies in real-world operations, but also highlights the importance of testing and evaluating such systems in the demanding environments for which they are designed,” says Paramount South Africa CEO Lindiwe Tshabalala.

“Paramount’s Maatla vehicles and UASs have been purpose-built to operate in precisely these conditions – remote, rugged and high-risk. The insights gained from live deployment are invaluable in informing future capability development and acquisition decisions.

“This operation clearly demonstrates how integrated technologies can transform border security. By combining aerial detection through drones, rapid response through armoured vehicles and real-time coordination enabled by body-worn cameras and command centre integration, we are equipping BMA teams with a powerful, end-to-end capability.

“As a proudly South African company, we remain deeply committed to supporting our national security institutions with home-grown, world-class technologies,” Tshabalala adds.
