The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed on Tuesday that Directors of Public Prosecutions in areas affected by the ongoing looting and violence have been advised to prioritise cases related to the riots.

The NPA is coordinating with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that there is transparent accountability for people accused of crimes during the protests that are taking place in the country.

Protests against the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma turned violent over the weekend, with looting and violence continuing to plague parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The NPA condemned the actions by looters, saying these undermined the rule of law and would negatively impact South Africa’s economy.

The authority is monitoring developments to ensure it is ready to respond appropriately.

“The law enforcement authorities must also do what is necessary to prevent further violence and acts of criminality. In particular, the focus must be on bringing to justice those responsible for incitement to commit acts of violence and other forms of criminal conduct,” the NPA said.

It pointed out that violence would not only destroy livelihoods, but that it would affect the poor and women and children.

The NPA is urging South Africans to protest lawfully.

“As Lawyers for the People of South Africa, the NPA will uphold the rule of law by ensuring that justice is delivered without fear, favour or prejudice,” it said.
