Government revealed plans yesterday, relating to the establishment of an agency that will disburse over R50-billion to the poor.

Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya will announce the details relating to the establishment of the National Social Security Agency (NSSA), that is part of government's effort to provide efficient services to the poorest of the poor.

Skweyiya is tasked with the management, administration and payment of social assistance grants.

Yesterday Skweyiya outlined key social development priorities for this year and the next five years.

The minister met his provincial colleagues yesterday where discussions will focus on issues of accelerated service delivery to vulnerable sectors such as children and people with disabilities.

"Other issues will be programmes of poverty alleviation, programmes and policies to protect vulnerable children, welfare transformation and more," a statement said. - BuaNews Meanwhile Sapa reports that a social development official told journalists at the briefing that the R300-million needed to set up the agency had already been set aside in the medium-term budget policy.

Skweyiya said the agency would manage a national database of all beneficiaries of social grants.

The number of beneficiaries was set to increase as government embarked on a campaign to register all children under the age of 11 eligible for grants this year. Next year, it would start registering children under the age of 14.

On his department's priorities for the next five years, Skweyiya said he hoped that the Older Persons Bill would be passed by the new Parliament by September at the latest.

The department would also focus on increasing access to poverty relief he said. - Sapa
