In a surprising turn of events, the ANC in Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality failed to attend their own proposed motion of no confidence against the MaP16 Speaker, Mayor, and Council Whip. This marks the second time this year that the local ANC has neglected to participate in Council sittings regarding their own motions.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) firmly believes that placing the municipality under section 139(7) National Administration is the necessary solution to turning MaP around. The current state of affairs demonstrates the municipality's inability to manage itself effectively.

The challenges facing MaP are extensive and alarming. The budget remains unfunded, a credible billing system is still absent, the court-ordered Eskom deal from 2021 remains unimplemented, and no skills audit or organogram has been approved. With MaP owing creditors over R10 billion, factories are shutting down due to unreliable water and electricity supply, resulting in a steep rise in unemployment, which now stands at 70%. Tragically, poverty and malnutrition, particularly severe acute malnutrition in children, are skyrocketing. It is evident that the MaP16 administration has been an undeniable failure.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the DA has formally requested national government intervention through the placement of MaP under National Section 139(7) administration. Our aim is to protect the 400,000 residents of MaP from further devastation caused by this ongoing crisis.

By advocating for national administration, the DA is taking decisive action to address the dire circumstances faced by the community. We are committed to holding those responsible accountable and ensuring that residents receive the essential services and support they deserve.
