Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday, the Multi-Party Government met for a round of Strategic Conversations with all City Departments and Entities, in order to take stock of where we are as a City, and where we intend on going as One City with One Goal under our programme of repairing and rebuilding Joburg, and realising our shared vision of transforming Joburg into a City of Golden Opportunities.

These two-day deliberations are the first steps towards developing the Adjustment Budget, Integrated Development Plan (IDP) public consultation processes and the 2023/24 Budget. This process also comes at a significant milestone, as the Multi-Party Government is close to marking a year in office on 22 November 2022.

The Strategic Conversations have provided us with space and time to conduct a deep-dive into the City’s finances as well as impediments – blind spots, human resource inefficiencies, and corruption – to the Executive and Administration fulfilling their constitutionally-mandate developmental and service delivery responsibilities.

Over the last few months, residents of Joburg have been subjected to a manufactured picture of a City in crisis, with half-truths and the manipulation of Council processes driving this campaign.

I want to assure residents that mitigating measures have been put in place to get the City’s fleet of vehicles back on the roads and delivering services. The frantic, even celebratory conduct, of Cllr Dada Morero and his allies about the City’s fleet says a lot about the unjust political hand at play that is designed to collapse the Multi-Party Government and capture Joburg. It must be noted that this unacceptable situation is the culmination of investigations into corruption, and the Council being used to block and frustrate the service delivery work of the Executive, Administration and Entities.

Despite a looming and unsubstantiated motion of no confidence in the Executive Mayor and the Members of the Mayoral Committee, we are continuing with the work of repairing and rebuilding Joburg.

This week the Multi-Party Government and City Power published requests for proposal for independent producers to work with us in order to reduce our reliance on Eskom and eventually see the end of rolling blackouts.

On Friday, I will continue with the Golden Connection Mayoral Tour, activities of which include community engagements and a visible service delivery blitz in Region G. On Sunday we will welcome 20,000 cyclists for the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg.

Next week, the Golden Connection Mayoral Tour will begin community engagements and service delivery programmes in Region B. Work is also underway to complete the A Re Sebetseng campaign for a cleaner and safer Joburg Region-by-Region tour in Regions A and E.

The Multi-Party Government is also ready to activate a number of capital projects, with the Departments of Transport, and Environment and Infrastructure Services unveiling projects in their respective spaces next week.

Despite setbacks, the work of repairing and rebuilding Joburg is in full motion, and we are strengthening our numbers to ensure reliable and quality services are delivered by the Multi-Party Government to Joburg’s 6-million residents.
