The MKP has asserted that the presumption of innocence must be upheld following the arrest of its Chief Whip Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi.
In a statement, the MKP confirmed the arrest of Mokoena-Zondi, relating to 2024 allegations of fraud in the recruitment of parliamentary support staff members.
The claims, being investigated by the Hawks, were initially reported by former MKP treasurer general Menzi Magubane.
Mokoena-Zondi reportedly presented herself to the authorities on Friday morning before she was formally arrested and charged.
“The MK Party reaffirms the constitutional principle of the presumption of innocence, that no person is guilty until proven so by a court of law,” it says.
The MKP says it is reviewing the validity of the allegations and consulting internally on the path forward. A meeting between party officials and the party's president is expected.
It says it is essential that all parliamentary, legal and internal organisational processes must be handled in a fair and transparent manner.
