The two-week strike by metal and engineering workers might come to an end on Monday as bilateral wage negotiations were concluded late on Thursday with a higher offer on the table.
The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (Seifsa) industrial relations manager Gordon Angus could not release any details of the revised offer on Friday morning, but said that union members were expected back at work on Monday.
Employers initially offered 7%, while workers demanded 13%.
National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) spokesperson Castro Ngobese told Engineering News Online that the union had not signed anything as yet. He said that the revised offer would be taken to workers on ground level after which a decision would be made on whether or not to end mass strike action, which started on July 4.
Meetings to discuss the revised offer would take place over the weekend, said Ngobese.
