Mbeki will be accompanied by Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa and Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, a statement issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Wednesday.
“President Mbeki and his delegation will participate in this forum within the context of South Africa's priority to promote North-South cooperation in support of the African agenda through, amongst others, the World Economic Forum,” the statement said.
According to the DFA, Mbeki will on Friday participate in a session called 'Africa sets a new pace,' during which discussions are expected to focus on how resource-rich economies can be incentivised to introduce good governance systems and which successful non-resource driven economies can provide models for growth, as well as what strategies are needed to support and sustain growth.
The organisers of the event have indicated that global security - particularly tensions in the Middle East - and climate change are expected to feature high on the agenda at the forum.
During the five-day meeting, over 2 400 participants from 90 countries will gather in Davos.
Around 50% are business leaders, including more than 800 CEOs and chairpersons from the world's leading companies.
Other attendees include 211 public figures, including 24 heads of state or government, 85 cabinet ministers, 24 ambassadors and 58 heads or senior officials of international organisations, as well as more than 482 participants from civil society.
