The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mahikeng Local Municipality will submit an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) to obtain the tender details, including the adjudication report, if any, for the substandard patching that was carried out on the two main roads in Golf View.
This comes after rumours that the contract was awarded to a politically connected person who does not specialize in road construction or repair, infuriating several other contractors who allegedly also submitted tenders.
On 25 April 2022, the municipality issued a notice (see attached) informing motorists of the planned "major patching" the following day. According to the notice, the work will be done by the municipality's own team, which does not appear to be the case.
Despite the fact that large sections of Quigley and Tillard Streets are impassable, only a few meters at the four-way stop and T-junction have been repaired. After only a month, the "major patching" has begun to show signs of major corrosion.
The municipality must explain the poor workmanship and inform the public of the associated costs.
Residents in Mahikeng are fed up with the state of the roads and the impact it is having on the local economy.
The DA will continue to investigate tender irregularities and mismanagement of public funds to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
