RISE Mzansi joins the community of Kempton Park and South Africans at large in expressing profound shock and conveying its condolences to the families and loved ones of the five deceased women. The unexplained killing of one woman is one too many; the unexplained death of five women over two months calls for all hands on deck.

This moment leaves women and communities across the country with anxiety and fear. It is therefore vital that the South African Police Service (SAPS), along with relevant law enforcement and government stakeholders, remain fully transparent about where they are in their investigations and open all available channels for people to come forward with information. Someone saw something; someone heard something that could aid in bringing the suspect or suspects to book.

Women are not safe in South Africa. South Africa’s level of femicide is roughly 5 to 6 times higher than the global rate, with approximately 4,000 women murdered every year. All hands on deck – not just policing – are required to end gender-based violence and femicide.

RISE Mzansi calls for the SAPS to act with care and urgency; and communicate transparently.
