THE Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu Natal is gravely concerned by the rapid increase of road accidents that kill more and more school children who travel with improper transport to and from school.

“The issue of learner transport should be a priority for both the Department of Education and Transport, we cannot afford to lose more schoolchildren in road accidents because of the mode of transport they use when travelling to schools that are far from areas of residence,” said Honourable Mntomuhle Khawula, Shadow MEC for Health.

The IFP’s concern rises from the Bulwer accident where six schoolchildren from Donnybrook and Blessed Luanda Primary schools were killed in a bakkie crash as the driver allegedly rolled on a bend.

“Children should not have been loaded in a bakkie in the first place, however, parents are compelled to resort to any available mode of transport where government is failing to provide communities with proper transportation” said Honourable Khawula.
The IFP would like to express its condolences to those families who are grieving for the loss of their children. The IFP is also urging the department of Education to start taking priority in Learner transport issues and safety of learner
