Among the highlights on this week’s parliamentary programme are Questions for Oral Reply to the President and four question-and-answer sessions with members of the executive in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). 

The week will start with a cluster media briefing on Monday, 24 August, where three Chairpersons of the Economic Cluster oversight committees will brief the media and stakeholders. The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Mr Mikateko Mahlaule, Ms Carol Phiri, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure and Mr Albert Mncwango, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Land Reform and Rural Development, will address the briefing as part of the 7th Parliament’s committee cluster media engagement programme.

Also on Monday at 18:00, the Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate Allegations made by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will meet to consider its draft report. The Speaker of the National Assembly earlier extended the deadline for the committee to submit its report. The deadline is now 11 September 2026.

On Tuesday at 14:00, President Cyril Ramaphosa will appear before the National Assembly to answer questions for oral reply. The President will respond to questions, including interventions to restore South Africa’s credibility as a Pan-African voice on the continent and in the diaspora amid protests against foreign nationals. He will also respond to questions about the structural reforms his administration has implemented to restore municipalities' capacity and strengthen accountability, ensuring communities receive reliable basic services that enable job creation.

Earlier on Tuesday at 09:30, Ministers in the Peace and Security Cluster (1A) will appear before the NCOP to answer questions for oral reply. The cluster comprises Ministers responsible for Police and Justice and Constitutional Development. Questions will cover Truth and Reconciliation Commission reparations, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s case-management system, transformation of the legal sector and proclamations of the Special Investigating Unit.

Later that day at 14:00, the NCOP will hold a second virtual plenary for an oral question-and-answer session with the Minister of Correctional Services in the Peace and Security Cluster (1B). Questions will include the department’s progress in addressing overcrowding in correctional centres and measures to strengthen correctional services infrastructure and technology to address cellphone smuggling.

On Wednesday at 14:00, the Ministers of International Relations and Cooperation and Defence and Military Veterans in the Peace and Security Cluster (1C) will appear before the NCOP. Questions to the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans will include the outcomes recorded since the deployment of the army to assist the police in combating illegal mining. Other questions will include the projected over-expenditure on the compensation of soldiers over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework period. The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation will respond to questions on international developments affecting South Africa, including the conflict involving the United States, Israel, Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Other questions relate to anti-immigration protests and the prevention of illegal immigration.

Also on Wednesday at 14:00, the National Assembly will consider a draft resolution by the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Mr Julius Malema, for a motion of no confidence in the Speaker of the National Assembly in terms of section 52(4) of the Constitution and Rule 28 of the Rules of the National Assembly. During the same sitting, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation will deliver a statement on the significance, outcomes and achievements of the inaugural National Science Month.

The National Assembly sitting will also consider the Standing Committee on Finance’s report on its oversight visit to the South African Revenue Service National Operations Command Centre in Tshwane on 30 April 2026. It will also consider the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation’s report on its oversight visit to South African missions in the Southern African Development Community region. The sitting will conclude with a decision on a question relating to committee reports debated on 21 August 2026.

On Thursday at 14:00, the NCOP will hold its final sitting before the constituency period, with Questions to the Peace and Security Cluster Minister (Cluster 1C). The question-and-answer session will be with the Minister in the Presidency.

Both Houses of Parliament will embark on constituency periods in the coming weeks. The NCOP constituency period will run from 31 August to 5 October 2026, while the NA constituency period will run from 31 August to 21 September 2026.
