The DA congratulates George Municipality for being the first municipality in South Africa, outside the metro, to pilot the online application platform for small-scale embedded electricity generation (SSEG).

The SSEG pilot project not only modernizes the SSEG application process but also, more importantly, the approval process to generate electricity in residential, commercial or industrial areas. The pilot project also signifies a notable step towards encouraging municipalities to become independent from Eskom and thereby curb loadshedding.

Currently, municipalities across the country only allow for the manual submission of the SSEG application, which in most cases results in delays with the approval process. As such, this online option will result in less red tape and a quicker turn-around time.

Today, South Africans again woke up to the news that Eskom will, indefinitely, implement stage six loadshedding due to the breakdown of several of the country’s power stations.

Increased rolling blackouts are steadily becoming the norm in our country and it has become abundantly clear that neither Eskom nor the ANC government are able to address and resolve the energy crisis. During his recent SONA President Ramaphosa yet again made hundreds of empty promises on resolving the energy crisis all of which we are yet to see implemented.

The efforts of local governments, such as George Municipality are, however, very encouraging and we congratulate George Municipality and its Electrotechnical Services team for their efforts.
