Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works Ignatius Jacobs yesterday told the Gauteng Legislature that vehicle registration and licensing fees were to increase.

The new fees, effective July 1, mean an average 4% increase across the board.

Motor cars, light goods vehicles, trucks and tractors would see an average 4,38% increase.

Learners' and drivers' licence fees, as part of a broader miscellaneous category, are to go up some 4,26%.

Fees on breakdown vehicles would go up some 3,98%.

Jacobs said that a new policy in the traffic department had reduced the unlicensed vehicle population to 80 243, passing the target of 109 000 from 114 738.

The NaTIS system has now been set to not allow printing of a disc if there are outstanding fees.

Jacobs also boasted that renewal of a vehicle licence now only takes five minutes, on average.

Other transactions take some 35 minutes and bulk applications are handled in 24 hours.
