The discovery of the bodies of four women in the Rhodesfield area of Kempton Park over approximately two months, and the disappearance of 38 year old Elizabeth Mokolo Moselakgomo after she went for an afternoon run on Wednesday, 10 September, is deeply disturbing.

As a woman, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and fear being experienced by the families of the women who have lost their lives, or by Elizabeth’s family as they wait for her return. My thoughts are especially with her eight year old daughter, who shouldn’t have to be waiting for her mother to come home.

SAPS has warned women in the area to exercise extreme caution, while a multidisciplinary task team investigates the circumstances surrounding these cases and whether they are connected.

We must take this warning seriously. Women should not have to fear going for a run, walking home or simply moving through their own communities.

Creating safer communities is one of my five pledges to the people of Ekurhuleni.

The DA will push the City to urgently assess safety risks in affected areas of Kempton Park and implement practical measures to improve visibility, lighting and security.

We cannot allow fear to become part of everyday life for women in Ekurhuleni. Every woman deserves to return home safely to her family.

We stand with the families affected by these tragedies, and we will continue to push for safer communities where residents can live without fear.
