It remains an ailment of the ANC and the government of South Africa to blame apartheid for everything that goes wrong in South Africa and to live in denial about the problems that exist, Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Labour said.

“Datsun wanted to invest in South Africa, but then it chose to open a motor vehicle plant in India. That is not the fault of apartheid but the ANC’s fault.

“BMW wanted to expand its 4-series in South Africa and wanted to manufacture it here. The company did not do it as a result of the labour unrest. It is not the fault of apartheid, it is the fault of the ANC.

“Nissan wanted to improve its manufacturing plant to manufacture its vehicles locally. The company however went to Nigeria due to labour problems. This also is not apartheid’s fault. This is the fault of the ANC.

“As long as the government stays in bed with Cosatu, you will not be able to resolve the labour problems in South Africa because Cosatu is your partner. Get out of Cosatu’s bed, you will pick up diseases there,” Dr. Groenewald said.

He said to ensure economic growth in South Africa, labour legislation should be changed drastically. One of these changes will have to be a change in the Act which will allow secret ballots before a strike.

With regards to the violence which accompanies strikes, Dr. Groenewald said legislation should be drafted which would declare a strike illegal if violence occurs These steps would place labour on the right road again,” Dr. Groenewald said.
