Unit two of the Koeberg nuclear power station in the Western Cape was shut down for refuelling and maintenance on Monday.
The shutdown would last about 55 days until the second week of May, and would take 900 MW off the country’s grid.
Eskom spokesperson Hillary Joffe said the outage would not disrupt electricity supply, even as demand rises with the colder winter months approaching. However, the utility still urged users to be energy efficient.
“We always plan shutdowns on the basis of forecasted peak demand, and usually leave around 2 000 MW of capacity as a buffer against any unforeseen outages,” she explained.
Unit one at Koeberg would operate at full power.
