The attachment of the City of Ekurhuleni's head office furniture by the Sheriff of the High Court is yet another embarrassing indictment of an administration that has normalised financial mismanagement and reactive governance. This indicates that Ekurhuleni is in a financial crisis and service delivery is suffering.

The City of Ekurhuleni is trying to downplay the seizing of its furniture by the Sheriff of the Court by saying it has nothing to do with debt owed but rather fees owed to the Sheriff. They are drowning in debt and unable to pay their creditors.

Court orders of this nature are only granted after a failure to comply with legal obligations. Bottom line, another bill went unpaid, and the Sheriff acted on it as is their legal right.

This affects service delivery to residents who are already battling to access proper sanitation, uninterrupted water, and electricity supply.

The City already owes more than R7 billion to its creditors, highlighting a municipality that is failing to meet its financial obligations. It is therefore no surprise that unpaid accounts are now escalating to court action and asset attachments.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has already requested a meeting with the Mayor of Ekurhuleni. During this meeting, we hope the mayor will be transparent about the financial state of the city and share a plan to address this going forward.

The situation cannot continue, and residents cannot be left waiting with empty promises. Ekurhuleni cannot continue to be governed through court orders and public embarrassment.

The Democratic Alliance believes that Ekurhuleni needs leadership that restores financial discipline, pays suppliers on time, resolves disputes before they escalate, and protects public resources.

A DA-led City of Ekurhuleni administration will not allow its creditors to go unpaid. DA governments pay suppliers reliably and as soon as possible, to the very best of our ability. That is what we want to bring to Ekurhuleni”

The people of Ekurhuleni deserve a government that acts before the Sheriff does. They can ensure this by registering to vote for the DA on the 4th of November so we can get Ekurhuleni working again.
