The Economic Freedom Fighters in KwaZulu-Natal is calling for  the Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison in the province to speed up investigations into political killings,  ahead of the 2024 National Elections.

We note with concern the recent Global Initiative Report Against Transnational Organized Crime that out of all the provinces, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of politically influenced murder cases  last year. According to this report the number of political killings in the province has been escalating since 2020.

While the Moerane Commission of Inquiry Into Political Killings was established in 2016, it has been moving at a snail’s pace and to date there has not been any breakthrough into these political killings.  Since then we have only  seen extensive meetings between the Provincial government and various stakeholders , but no fruitful results to date

With all provincial departments having pledged to contribute R10 million each towards crime fighting initiatives, we really hope that a certain portion of this budget will be set aside to prioritize political killings.

In order for next year’s elections to run smoothly,  it will be vital to stabilize the province well ahead of the National Elections.
