The Economic Freedom Fighters (EEF) has reiterated its call for international accountability for US President Donald Trump, as it commended Iran’s “resilience and strategic victory” over the US and Israel.
This after Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, a few hours before his self-imposed deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“What has emerged from this confrontation is that the US, despite its military arrogance, has been forced to retreat and accept a framework of engagement shaped by Iran itself.
“Even by its own admission, the administration of Donald Trump has agreed to use Iran's ten-point plan as the basis for negotiation. This is an extraordinary retreat by a superpower that began this conflict with threats of annihilation,” said the EFF.
The party noted Trump’s threats to destroy “a whole civilisation” before ultimately agreed to ceasefire, with the party characterising this reversal as an “extraordinary retreat” by a superpower that began this conflict with threats of annihilation.
“…even sections of the US media have acknowledged that he cowardly backed down at the final hour, exposing the emptiness of his threats. Reduced to erratic outbursts and delusional claims of triumph, he represents a declining empire that is loud, aggressive, but increasingly incapable of enforcing its will,” the EFF said.
The party repeated its support for Iran saying the country’s resistance is part of a global shift away from unipolar control toward a new world order defined by sovereignty, dignity and resistance.
Meanwhile, the South African Communist Party (SACP) called on the international community to remove US interference in the Gulf region and wider West Asia, and to end the war against Iran and Palestine.
The party said Trump’s threats to destroy Iran’s civilian infrastructure and "a whole civilisation” is unprecedented in its blatant disregard for international law and the rules of engagement.
“In the context of modern warfare, the US has violated more international laws than any other superpower at least over the past half-century. This includes a 20-year occupation and destruction of Vietnam, a nine-year war in Iraq and a 19-year war in Afghanistan, among others,” it stated.
The SACP said Trump’s threat to destroy energy generation capabilities, desalination facilities, bridges and other critical infrastructure shows a US regime that has transgressed all boundaries in its pursuit of greater power and the annihilation of Iran, which the SACP said has resisted that expansionist agenda.
“This threat is further compounded by the belligerent genocide-orientated apartheid regime of Israel as a co-conspirator, creating an even more perilous environment for the Iranian people. It extends beyond the violation of the letter of the Geneva Conventions and standards generated in that respect and concerns the moral standing of the US as a proponent of human rights and the so-called rules-based international order,” it added.
