DMR: Outcome of the Steelpoort community meeting

The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) together with the Sekhukhune District Executive Mayor, David Magabe and Local Mayor of Greater Tubatse, Ralepane Mamekoa led a progressive meeting with community leaders and Southern Cluster mining companies, which saw the end of violent protest action in Steelpoort. 


The meeting noted the continuation of the protests erupted, whilst the Thaba Moshate agreement remained in place.
This intervention follows the signing of the Thaba Moshate agreement on the 22 July 2015.
At this meeting, mining companies reconfirmed their commitment to the implementation of the agreement, and addressing payment issues for workers who were negatively affected during the recent protest action to date, as a once-off arrangement.

The meeting further agreed as follows:
To end the violence, all hostilities and the protect actions with effect from 12 August 2015.
constituted a Task Team comprising of community representatives from Ga-Phasha, Mapodile, Tukakgomo, Ngwaabe villages, Stoking, Mahlakwena communities; DMR; Local Economic Development and Tourism (LEDED); South African Police Services (SAPS); Greater Tubatse Municipality; Sekhukhune District Municipality; Southern Cluster, Mines and Smelters as well as Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).
Adopted the Terms of Reference for the Task Team
Inaugurated the Task Team
Implemented an Imbizo rollout programme and communicate it to communities
First meeting of the Task Team to be held on 14 August 2015. 
That the outcome of this agreement to be widely communicated to their respective communities, and

The parties further re-confirmed to observing the rule of law and order, and discouraged acts of violence.
