The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) has written (letter to be found here) to the University of KwaZulu-Natal Vice Chancellor, Nana Poku, to urgently request an extension of the postgraduate registration deadline, as well as a fee remission for returning Masters students.

As DASO UKZN, it has been brought to our attention that the cut-off date for postgraduate registration has been set for the 5th February 2021. Given that numerous opportunities to apply for funding only open in March 2021, this places students at a severe disadvantage as they are unable to avail themselves to numerous funding opportunities to cover their registration fee.

On top of this financially needy post-graduate students who are returning for their second year of Masters Studies have not been granted a registration fee remission despite receipt of the remission in their first year. This unfortunately places many returning students who relied on this financial assistance in a situation where they are now unable to complete their Master’s Degree.

The funding and support of postgraduate students has not been given due consideration by the university resulting in a dire situation for many deserving but financially strained students. UKZN prides itself on being one of the top research-based universities; yet, future academics are being disadvantaged due to poor foresight, planning and support.

For a country riddled with corruption, the best chance we have at securing a stable future is through quality education. The government together with university management should be going out of their way to ensure that all students get an education regardless of their financial background

DASO believes that every deserving student should have a right to pursue an education, and we call on UKZN to step-up and accommodate retiring masters students. We have also suggested that the university look into securing more funding to support their postgraduate students.
