Ahead of the November 4 local government election, and after filing an answering affidavit opposing the DA’s application in the Electoral Court to declare its candidate list unlawful, the GOOD party is also questioning Helen Zille’s residency in Johannesburg as she plans to contest the mayoralship for the DA in the city.

The DA has launched an urgent application in the Electoral Court against ActionSA, the EFF, the MKP, and the GOOD party, accusing them of undermining electoral laws ahead of the upcoming local government election.

The legal challenge centres on allegations that these parties are deliberately concealing their proportional representation candidates from the public by submitting lists containing just a single name.

GOOD said today that its PR list, with one name in each of the 25 municipalities it is contesting, complied with the law and was certified by the Independent Electoral Commission.

However, the party was not done. It is further taking legal advice on whether Zille’s registration in Johannesburg as the DA’s mayoral candidate is lawful.

GOOD argues that Zille’s residence, by her own account, is in Cape Town, further stating that if it is advised that Zille’s candidacy is unlawful, it will take legal action.

Eskom chairperson Dr Mteto Nyati, whose term has been extended by a further three years, says the board’s top priority has shifted from guaranteeing electricity stability to ensuring affordability.

In addition, he drew a direct link between that goal and moves under way to fully separate the National Transmission Company South Africa from Eskom Holdings, while questioning the prevailing view that he and the board were opposed to such restructuring.

Nyati said the board would now focus on implementing the ‘Eskom 2.0’ strategy outlined for it by its shareholder.

The strategy has multiple objectives, but places emphasis on the need for affordable electricity for both businesses and households and to facilitate government’s reindustrialisation vision.

All 29 beds were full this week at the Kitatumba Ebola treatment centre in Congos North Kivu province, where surging cases have overwhelmed health facilities even as the deadly virus shows signs of easing elsewhere.

City authorities announced the opening of two new treatment centres this week to deal with the demand, bringing the total to four.

But some patients arrive so unwell, there is nothing doctors can do, said Medecins Sans Frontieres project coordinator Stephanie Hoffmann.

She described the case of a 10-year-old boy who died in triage before doctors could admit him to the facility.

The scenes underscore the difficulty of containing Ebola across a stretch of eastern Congo that is bigger than France – one where medical resources are stretched thin.
