Making headlines:
Labour federation Cosatu will launch its own youth league called Cosatu Young Workers at its national congress next year, City Press reports. Cosatu’s move to start a youth wing marked an about-turn from its 2015 plan to "ensure young workers join the Young Communist League", said interim general secretary Azania Matiwane. The youth organisation would target unemployed youth who participated in Sector Education and Training Authorities learnerships to become members, he said.
South Africa is showing gentle improvement in human and economic development, according to the latest South African Development Index (SADI) released on Friday. "Of the six policy areas tracked by this index, three policy areas showed improvement and three remained the same," the index found. The economic policy area showed a slight increase of 0.03 points, health policy area an increase of 0.4 points and the crime sector an improvement of 0.52 points. Education, living conditions and gender remained unchanged. The SADI was released by the SA Institute of Race Relations.
South Africa's petrol pump prices in the main inland commercial region will increase by up to 37 cents or 3.5% on Wednesday, the energy department said. The new pump price for 95 grade petrol will be R10.54 a litre in that region, from R10.18 last month, while the wholesale diesel price will increase by 3.8% to R9.65. South Africa is a net importer of oil and adjusts its fuel price each month to account for changes in the rand exchange rate, the international oil price and government levies.
