The president, his deputy, and cabinet ministers have all approved the appointment of South African Local Government Association CEO Xolile George as secretary of Parliament.

The position of the Secretary to Parliament has been vacant for almost five years.

George will assume his duties on June 1, subject to the houses' confirmation of his appointment.

The presiding officers said George is an administrator who will bring deep knowledge and extensive experience in a range of areas that include intergovernmental and international relations, development economics, and political-administration interface.

They believe George’s appointment will bring the required stability in the administration of Parliament.

Freedom Under Law to oppose further attempts to delay Hlophe’s impeachment

Legal nonprofit Freedom Under Law has welcomed the Judicial Service Commission’s dismissal of Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe’s application to review the gross misconduct finding against him.

Freedom Under Law says it will oppose any further attempts to delay his impeachment proceedings.

Hlophe was found guilty of impeachable gross misconduct for trying to sway Constitutional Court Justices to rule in favour of former African National Congress president Jacob Zuma in his 2008 bid to invalidate Scorpions search and seizure warrants.

FUL chairperson Judge Johann Kriegler said it is in the interests of justice and the rule of law that the impeachment process against Hlophe be undertaken without any further delay.

Eskom COO says the only way to solve Eskom and Transnet problems is to work as SA Incorporated

Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer said putting South Africa’s 60-million people first and working as South Africa Incorporated is the only way to solve the problems of the country’s biggest State-owned enterprises, Eskom and Transnet.

This message was put out loudly and clearly during a panel discussion at McCloskey’s Southern African Coal Conference, where he warned that if South Africans don’t get together and start working as SA Incorporated, the country will run out of electricity generation capacity.

Reiterating Oberholzer’s sentiments, Sereti CEO Mike Teke said without Eskom and Transnet functioning the economy will fall flat and end up as a failed state.

Oberholzer outlined that Eskom’s three monster challenges are operational, financial and environmental aspects.

Eskom has 15 coal-fired power stations, the two newest with design defects and the 13 others averaging 43 years in age and coming to the end of their lives.
