South Africa to send envoys to other African countries after xenophobic attacks
South Africa will send envoys to other African countries and around the world after a spate of xenophobic attacks targeting immigrants from other nations on the continent, President Cyril Ramaphosa said today.
Ramaphosa made the comments at a press conference after talks with his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto at the seat of South Africa's government in Pretoria.
He said government seeks to properly address the issue of immigration, noting the need for cooperation among many countries.
Business leaders demand government step in to rescue Joburg from economic collapse
The South African business sector has issued an urgent call to political parties and national government to immediately stabilise the City of Johannesburg’s fiscal and governance crisis.
Ahead of the upcoming local government elections, business leaders demand specific, costed recovery plans, consequence management for corruption, and active national intervention to prevent an economic emergency.
Leaders from the Business Unity South Africa, Business Leadership South Africa and the Business for South Africa steering committee emphasise that this is not a localised political dispute, but a critical national economic emergency.
Business leaders want immediate, tangible changes rather than empty promises, urging political parties to stabilise the City’s finances now and not after the next election.
They want the elimination of irregular expenditure and clear, transparent reporting against specific service delivery indicators, and "consistent and exceptionless” enforcement of accountability for corruption and maladministration.
All parties contesting the elections must provide specific, costed commitments on how they plan to address the fiscal crisis, restore infrastructure, and re-establish functional governance, they says.
And, Ruto says allowing US to build Ebola facility in Kenya is the 'right thing'
Kenyan President William Ruto said his government was doing "the right thing" by allowing the United States to set up an Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya.
According to flight data and officials, the US government is continuing to build the Ebola quarantine facility at an air force base in Kenya, despite protests and Kenyan court orders blocking it.
At least two people were killed earlier this week in protests in the central Kenyan town of Nanyuki, home to the base where the 50-bed quarantine unit for Americans who might be exposed to the virus is being built.
A Kenyan court first ordered work on the Ebola facility to be suspended on May 28. The US embassy in Nairobi has said it is working with the Kenyan government to resolve any objections.
The Ebola outbreak has infected hundreds in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicentre of the outbreak, and has spread to neighbouring Uganda, which has reported 15 cases.
