Senior fire safety staff putting together findings on Parliament fire

Senior fire safety staff are putting together their findings after they looked into the cause of the fire that broke out at Parliament in Cape Town on Sunday.

Their findings will be handed over to the police, mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said.

The fire gutted the third floor of the Old Assembly building, including office space and the gymnasium. The roof of the Old Assembly building collapsed.

Parts of the ceiling at the New Assembly building, to which the fire spread, also collapsed. Extensive damage was caused to the National Assembly.

 

SA records 4 379 new infections as deaths increase by 30

South Africa recorded 4 379 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, which represent a 23.1% positivity rate.

There were also 30 new Covid-19 deaths, which increased the death toll to 91 228.

Most new cases are from the Western Cape (with 27% of the cases) followed by Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal with 21% each. The Eastern Cape accounted for 11% of cases; the Free State and Mpumalanga recorded 5% each; the Northern Cape holds 4% of cases; and Limpopo and the North West 3% each.

There was an increase of 27 hospital admissions on Sunday. There are 9 353 people in public and private hospitals.

 

And, Emalahleni Mayor Linah Malatjie dies in car accident

Emalahleni Mayor Linah Malatjie has died in a car accident.

Municipal spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng confirmed the death.

However, he said further details would only be released after municipal representatives had met with Malatjie's family.
