Paul Mashatile says ANC MPs who defied party in Phala Phala vote will be disciplined

ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile says ANC members of Parliament who voted for the adoption of the Section 89 panel's report on President Cyril Ramaphosa's Phala Phala dealings will face disciplinary action.

Mashatile said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Mosebenzi Zwane, Supra Mahumapelo, Tandi Mahambehlala and Mervyn Dirks were wrong for voting with the opposition.

He said despite complaints that members were bullied into voting, those complaints would have to be explained at a disciplinary process.

The ANC national conference starts tomorrow, and Mashatile said he expected the party to close its gathering united.

Court dismisses ANC treasurer-general hopeful Andile Lungisa's bid to set aside suspension

Controversial ANC member Andile Lungisa's high court appeal to have a two-year suspension set aside has been dismissed.

Lungisa sought interim relief after the party's Eastern Cape provincial executive committee recently announced that his membership had been suspended until 6 September 2023.

The matter emanated from Lungisa having allegedly defied the ANC in the province after being asked to resign following his conviction in 2018 for smashing a water jug over the head of a fellow councillor.

He was sentenced to three years in jail, with one year suspended and later released on parole after spending less than two months of his two-year sentence.

China’s factories brace for tsunami of Covid cases

From locking in workers to hoarding medicines, beds and disinfectant, China’s factories are going to great lengths to keep the machines running — and the global supply chain intact — as an onslaught of Covid cases looms.

The world’s second-biggest economy is rapidly dismantling restrictions that largely kept the virus at bay for almost three years.

The resulting eruption in infections is set to be a key test for a vast network of factories that account for almost one-third of the world’s manufacturing output.

Outbreaks have the potential to cripple production or tear through employee rosters, threatening the global supply of everything from cars and golf carts to kitchen appliances and, of course, iPhones.
