Dr Joe Phaahla says it is not yet clear if SA has entered the fifth wave
Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla said that it was not yet clear if South Africa has entered the fifth wave of Covid-19 early, but the numbers suggest that the country is on the brink of one.
He said the fifth wave was expected to begin towards the middle of May or early June.
Phaahla indicated that former chair of the Covid-19 advisory committee Dr Salim Abdool Karim on Tuesday argued from a technical definition that the country had entered the fifth wave, highlighting that more than five cases on a daily basis per 100 000 of the population indicated that most provinces had indeed entered the new wave.
However, he said from another characterisation, it was arguable that a country only entered a new wave when there was a sustained seven-day period of more than 6 237 new cases per day.
Presidency receives fourth part of Zondo Commission's report into State capture
The Presidency has received the fourth part of the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture.
Secretary of the Commission Professor Itumeleng Mosala handed over the report to acting Director-General in The Presidency Thami Ngwenya at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Part four of the report comprises four volumes, with the first dealing with the attempted capture of the National Treasury; EOH Holdings and the City of Johannesburg; and Alexkor.
The second volume deals with the Free State asbestos project debacle and the Free State R1-billion housing project debacle.
The third and fourth volumes deal with the capture of electricity utility Eskom.
The first part of the report was handed over to President Cyril Ramaphosa by the Commission Chairperson, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, in January. This was followed by the handover of the second and third part of the report in February and March, respectively.
And, Ramaphosa attends former Kenyan President’s funeral
President Cyril Ramaphosa is attending the State funeral of former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki in Kenya.
The former statesman, who served from 2003 to 2013, died on April 21 at the age of 90.
He will be laid to rest at his home in Othaya, in the Nyeri highlands, on Saturday.
Ramaphosa is being accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr Naledi Pandor.
