Making headlines:

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has been expelled from the ANC, its National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal (NDCA) announced last night. "In respect of the present disciplinary hearing, the NDCA confirms the sanction imposed by the NDC that the appellant be expelled from the ANC," it said. Malema was originally suspended for five years for sowing division in the party and for bringing it into disrepute.

The UN Security Council demanded that Sudan immediately stop airstrikes on South Sudan and will consider in the coming days what further steps to take to stop clashes between the East African neighbours spiralling into war. Senior UN officials told the 15-nation body that aerial bombing of South Sudan's Unity state on Monday night had killed 16 civilians, injured several dozen and caused significant damage to infrastructure. The Sudanese army has denied carrying out airstrikes.

Efforts to stop e-tolling experienced a hiccup when the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed an attempt to submit amended court documents relating to toll fee exemptions. The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, one of four applicants, argued in an amended affidavit filed on Saturday that tolling could not go ahead on April 30 because exemptions for public transport were not in place. Jeremy Gauntlett, for the National Treasury, argued that the new amendments to the case broadened its scope to such an extent that his client would be prejudiced.

Also making headlines:

Egypt's ruling military has approved a law that bans top Hosni Mubarak-era officials from running for the presidency, excluding his last Prime Minister and further depleting a field reduced by the disqualifications of other front-runners.

That’s a roundup of news making headlines today.
