Parties await DA’s support on Amad’s Motion of No Confidence

ActionSA, the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African Christian Democratic Party said were waiting to see if the Democratic Alliance would support tomorrow’s Motions of No Confidence to remove City of Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad, as well as the Speaker and Chief Whip in Johannesburg.

The parties noted that the DA’s own caucus in Johannesburg has filed its own Motions of No Confidence against the same people.

DA leader John Steenhuisen communicated that the party will not participate in any coalition that could replace the African National Congress and Economic Freedom Fighters in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Over the weekend political parties received letters from Steenhuisen in which the DA said it would not form part of a coalition that involves the Patriotic Alliance in Johannesburg in the near future.

This follows a meeting held on April 19 between leadership of the DA, ActionSA, PA, IFP, Freedom Front Plus and ACDP to discuss the support for Motions of No Confidence to remove Amad, and to replace his ANC and EFF government with a multi-party coalition including the parties that elected Mayor Mpho Phalatse in November 2021.

eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda's private home comes under 'attack

The private home of eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda came under "attack" yesterday evening.

Municipality spokesperson Simphiwe Dlamini said in a statement that the City's leadership condemned the "senseless attack".

Dlamini said although the mayor is a public figure and the number one citizen of the city, he and his family deserve to be protected.

He added that the City understood the confusion among members of the public over the fact that some political figures, such as mayors and premiers, live in state houses.

He said this may allow citizens to feel entitled to march to their houses. The City clarified that the mayor stays in a private residence and his home is not public property.

The actual nature of the "attack" is yet to be communicated to the public.

And, Diesel price set for cut next week, but petrol may get pricier

The wholesale diesel price looks set for a cut on Wednesday next week, but petrol may become pricier.

Based on the latest oil and rand prices, the latest data from the Central Energy Fund shows that diesel prices could be lowered by 26c to 51c a litre, depending on the grade. Unleaded 95 petrol, however, may be hiked by around 60c.

Fuel prices are determined by the price of oil and the rand-dollar exchange rate.

The oil price has climbed steadily from $78 a barrel a month ago to around $81 currently. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries recently announced plans for additional supply cuts, while a rebound in the Chinese economy also supported the oil price.

At the start of April, the diesel price was cut by more than 73c a litre on Wednesday, while 95 petrol increased by 2c.

The price of a litre of 95 unleaded petrol is now R22.97 in Gauteng, compared to R21.60 a year before – and a record price of R26.74 in July last year.
