EFF victory in Northern Cape by-elections spells trouble for ANC
The ANC has lost its majority in the unstable Phokwane Local Municipality in the Northern Cape after the Economic Freedom Fighters clinched a seat from the party with the help of its former member and mayor.
In yesterday’s by-elections, former mayor of the municipality Olebogeng Tumodi, who was axed from the ANC, managed to reclaim the ward he previously held, leaving the ANC with less dominance in the council.
The EFF won the ward by 56%, compared to the ANC's 43%.
Tumodi was expelled from the ANC earlier this year, after the party claimed he hadn't attended crucial meetings.
The municipality has been unstable and there have been concerns that the instability has impacted service delivery.
Uncertainty is likely to continue if a coalition government is not formed to run the municipality.
Petrol price currently on track for a cut in May
According to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund, the petrol price may be lowered in the first week of May. However, diesel users may still face a hike.
With more than a week to go before fuel prices are fixed, the current data show that 95 octane petrol is set to be lowered by around 34c a litre, and 93 octane by 32c a litre. According to current estimates, diesel will rise by between 75c and 81c, and illuminating paraffin by 68c/l.
Local fuel prices are determined by international oil prices, as well as the dollar-rand value, as South Africa buys oil in dollars. Movements in the oil and rand prices before month-end will still impact the final prices for May.
Ukranian ambassador believes that Ramaphosa's call to Zelensky a 'very strong signal to Putin'
Ukraine’s ambassador to South Africa believes a call between President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, has sent a strong signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ramaphosa and Zelensky spoke last night and dialogue between the two men centred on cooperation between South Africa and Ukraine.
Talks between Ramaphosa and Zelensky come a month after Ramaphosa held a similar discussion with Putin.
Zelensky tweeted last night that his conversation with Ramaphosa focused on Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression, the threat of a global food crisis and Ukraine deepening relations with South Africa.
