The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the confirmation from the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, that the disappearance of the Afrikaans news bulletin on SABC2 this past weekend was due to an unfortunate scheduling error by the SABC. We appreciate the minister's prompt intervention in liaising with the SABC leadership to resolve the matter and provide much-needed clarity to the public.

The sudden absence of the Afrikaans news bulletin over the weekend caused unnecessary confusion and concern, particularly for the over 300 000 viewers who rely on the program for vital news in their preferred language. It is reassuring to know that this was an isolated incident and not a decision to permanently halt the service.

The minister's intervention has helped to bring transparency to the situation, which is crucial for ensuring that all South Africans can continue to access the news and information they depend on.

The DA remains committed to holding the SABC accountable as the public broadcaster, which has a duty to serve all language communities across the country. We will continue to monitor the return of the Afrikaans news bulletin over the weekend to ensure that such errors do not occur again in the future.
