The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the landmark partnership spearheaded by Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe between the department and Google South Africa, which marks a significant step towards aligning South Africa’s education system with the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

This Memorandum of Understanding reflects a clear commitment to addressing one of South Africa’s most pressing structural challenges: the growing mismatch between the skills produced by the post-school education system and those required by industry. By prioritising training in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital marketing, this initiative has the potential to better prepare young South Africans for meaningful participation in the economy.

The planned rollout of thousands of training opportunities and 10 000 Google Career Certificate scholarships represents a tangible investment in human capital, especially for students in township and rural communities who are often excluded from digital opportunities. This is the minister's fourth strategic partnership with the private sector.

Importantly, the partnership also recognises the role of entrepreneurship and innovation in driving inclusive growth, enabling young people not only to seek employment but to create it.

The DA will continue to support initiatives that expand access to quality education and partnerships that deliver measurable outcomes and real opportunities for South Africa’s youth.
