The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape welcomes the appointment of Lieutenant-General Sizakhele William Dyantyi as the new Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape.
The appointment comes at a critical time for our province. We wish Lieutenant-General Dyantyi success in taking up this important responsibility and trust that he will provide the decisive leadership needed to confront the Western Cape's persistent crime crisis.
The reality is stark. On average,11 people are murdered every day in the Western Cape, while more than 290,000 active criminal cases remain on the books. More than 90% of South Africa's gang-related murders occur in this province, placing an immense burden on our police officers and devastating communities that continue to live in fear.
Benedicta van Minnen, MPP, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Police Oversight and Community Safety said: “The Western Cape cannot continue to bear this disproportionate share of the country's violent crime without receiving the policing resources required to respond effectively. The province remains under-resourced despite carrying the greatest burden of gang violence. Communities deserve a police service that is properly resourced and empowered to dismantle gangs, combat violent crime and restore public confidence in law enforcement.”
The DA therefore calls on Lieutenant-General Dyantyi to be a strong and independent advocate for the people of the Western Cape. We need a Provincial Commissioner who is prepared to engage frankly with national government and fight for the additional personnel, specialised units, detectives and operational resources that this province urgently requires.
The DA stands ready to work constructively with the new Provincial Commissioner in advancing safer communities, while continuing to hold the national government accountable for providing the resources necessary to protect the people of the Western Cape.
