The Democratic Alliance in the North West calls on the MEC for Education, Sello Lehari, to address the shortage of teachers at Promosa Secondary School following protests from matric learners at the school.

Today, matriculants and parents have taken to the streets, barricading roads and burning tyres demanding that the shortage of teachers at their school be addressed.

The DA was informed that there are currently vacancies for two teachers, one for Accounting and one for Science, in subjects which are essential and scarce skills subjects.

It is a disgrace that learners have to go to such lengths to get teachers while the North West Department of Education continues to fail our children and decreasing the prospects of learners working towards a bright future.

Teachers play a significant role in grooming, educating and instilling knowledge and values for learners, especially matriculants who depend on teachers to help them through their last year of school.

It is unfortunate that the ANC government is more focused on putting out fires caused by their own internal factional battles and they are neglecting services such as providing quality education and creating a conducive learning environment for learners.

The DA calls on MEC Lehari to conduct an in-depth assessment of Promosa Secondary School and to ensure that provision is made for the school to receive the necessary teachers, and other resources the school may be lacking.

The DA understands the frustration experienced by learners and parents, however, we call for a calm and peaceful protest demonstration. We will in the coming week conduct an oversight visit to the school to assess the severity of the situation.

Unfortunately, Promosa Secondary School is one of many schools in the province that faces a shortage of teachers. It is time for a Total change where the delivery of quality education is prioritized, only the DA government can bring this change to our province.
