The Democratic Alliance (DA)  in uMgungundlovu District municipality welcomes the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, response to our query to have the municipality share findings of a Special Investigations Unit report into allegations of financial misconduct and corruption in the Mandela Day Marathon.

The report is dated 30 September 2020 and to date the Mayor has failed to present this report. We have written to the Mayor’s Office to request for the report to be presented, we are yet to receive a response.

The Mayor has purposely, and unlawfully delayed the submission of this report to Council. It is abundantly clear that this SIU report and its findings is of no interest to the ANC leadership.

In his response the MEC ensured that he has made a written request to the municipality as well as the SIU about the said report.

We are hopeful that the SIU have been invited to the Full Council meeting scheduled for Thursday to present the report. Failing this, we will have no option but to access the report via Section 32 of the Constitution.

The ANC have once again shown that they are not serious about corruption and have failed to act timeously and decisively. The DA caucus in uMgungundlovu will not accept any further excuses from the Mayor and the ANC, until we see this report dealt with accordingly.

We will continue to fight against corruption, and make sure that those who have caused the collapse of this municipality are brought to book.

The DA is the only hope in restoring good governance and ensuring that the uMgungundlovu District Municipality can once again fulfill its mandate of providing effective and efficient basic services.
