The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Setsoto welcomes the removal of the Executive Mayor, Komane Koalane, after a motion of no confidence tabled by the United Front of Civics (UFC) passed. We as the DA are calling for an urgent Council sitting to elect a new Mayor.

Yesterday, 14th of April 2021, the DA and other opposition parties supported the motion and successfully voted the Mayor out by 15 to 14 votes. The DA proposed and fought hard for the voting to be done through a secret ballot and we succeeded.

In two previous sittings, ANC Councillors opted to collapse the meetings as they were protecting cadre deployment, instead of facing the reality of an Executive Mayor that is not performing. The Executive Mayor has for a long time abused his delegated powers in improper appointments of people close to him, he mismanaged funds and has not been in compliance of procurement processes on many occasions.

Yesterday a new Mayor could not be elected as the ANC again left and a quorum could not be formed. The business of the day was left hanging and it was not concluded. This clearly indicates the lack of commitment by the ANC to serve the community of Setsoto.

The Municipality is currently without a Municipal Manager and Director of Engineering. Other critical positions have not been filled. There is no Mayoral Committee and section 79 and 80 committees can also not sit to hold officials accountable and do their oversight.

The DA will continue to fight for services to be delivered as well as a corrupt free Municipality. It is only the DA that can bring real change in the upcoming 2021 Local Government Elections.
