In December 2025, the DA brought an application in the Durban High Court to interdict the appointment of two senior staff members of eThekwini municipality. Executive Director of Water and Sanitation as well as the Executive Director for Public Safety.

The case having been heard partially was postponed to 24 July 2026.

The main heads of argument surround the serious material irregularities in the appointment of these staff members and the lack of qualifications for the job.

It is our view that the persons who are responsible for the destruction of the city should not be appointed permanently to positions in the city and should instead be held accountable for their failures.

EThekwini municipality is losing billions of rands every year through non-revenue water losses which impacts directly on high water bills residents are expected to pay. It is simply not acceptable that the persons who are responsible for these failures are being rewarded with promotions.

The DA is ready to govern eThekwini after the next elections, in which we will appoint highly qualified staff with proven track records to ensure competent and effective city management.

This court interdict is one of the first steps that we are implementing to return good governance to eThekwini and get the city working again.
