The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Tuesday it has opened a case of inciting violence against Black First Land First (BLF) leader Andile Mngxitama following his threats against white South Africans at a weekend rally.

"Calling on people to join a militia outfit and inciting violence against individuals or groups of South Africans goes against the very grain of our constitutional order. This sort of behaviour seeks only to divide our nation on the basis of race and threatens the gains we have made towards reconciliation and truly building One South Africa for All," said Joe McGluwa, the DA's premier candidate for North West province.

McGluwa said he opened the case at the Potchefstroom police station and gave the case number as 199/12/2018.

On Saturday, Mngxitama addressed a rally at Ikageng and threatened that for every black person killed, five whites would be killed.

"You kill one of us, we will kill five of you. We will kill their children, we will kill their women, we will kill anything that we find on our way," Mngxitama said.

McGluwa said the remarks threatened a return to the race-based violence of the apartheid era.

"The DA will not idly stand by and allow those who wish to dump this country back into the darkness of Apartheid to do so unopposed. The SAPS should investigate these charges, which would be an easy exercise to do, as evidence of Mngxitama’s incitement to violence is well documented and in the public domain. Mngxitama should be quickly prosecuted."

The DA has also reported the BLF and Mngxitama to the South African Human Rights Commission and the Equality Court.
