Today, the DA in KwaZulu-Natal attended the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) code of conduct signing ceremony at the Olive Convention Centre, Durban.
This to reaffirm our commitment to peaceful, free and fair elections. We are committed to upholding the Constitution, respecting the rule of law and protecting every voter’s right to make their choice freely and without intimidation.
Our political differences may be strong, but they must never become a reason to undermine democracy. We must compete vigorously, but peacefully, and respect the right of every voter to make their own choice.
It is important for political leaders to show unity and strongly condemn any divisions in our communities due to political differences.
We are further warning against any leaders that plan to use state resources to campaign for their political parties.
The IEC itself needs to ensure that they remain an independent body with no favourites. There needs to be one set of rules for all parties.
As the DA we will play our part to ensure an electoral period characterised by peace, tolerance, accountability and respect.
Democracy is not only about the freedom to choose. It is also about our collective responsibility to protect that freedom.
