The DA on Tuesday laid charges against acting municipal manager for the Mohokare local lunicipality in the Free State Mopedi Mohale, as it carries out its pledge to go after the ten "worst" municipal managers across nine municipalities.
DA parliamentary leader George Michalakis said the party wants Mohale to account for several unresolved irregularities in disclaimed audit outcomes, for three years.
“In March, Mr Mohale was also issued with a 'Notice of Intention to Issue a Certificate of Debt' by the Auditor-General (AG). This relates to a bulk water pipeline project that was never completed. It is a last resort mechanism for accountability after wasteful public expenditure,” Michalakis said.
The DA is going after municipal officials it has labelled the worst in the country, owing to systemic financial negligence.
The DA is pursuing these cases under Section 173(1) of the Municipal Finance Management Act, which criminalises gross financial negligence, material accounting irregularities and supplying false information to the AG.
