The Democratic Alliance in Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality condemns the financial collapse of Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality following the seizure of municipal vehicles by the Sheriff due to unpaid debts. This crisis is having a direct impact on residents, as the municipality is now struggling to respond to critical service delivery issues, including electricity outages, water leaks, sewer spillages, road maintenance, and other essential services.
The Executive Mayor has attributed the situation to municipal employees not receiving salaries after the Equitable Share allocation was withheld. However, employees have since received their salaries after National Treasury released the funds. This confirms that the municipality’s challenges are not simply due to a lack of funding, but are a result of poor financial management, weak governance, and misplaced priorities by the current municipal leadership.
The Democratic Alliance calls for an urgent Council briefing with the Speaker, Executive Mayor, and Municipal Manager to account for the municipality’s debts, the seizure of vehicles, and the impact on service delivery. We further demand full financial transparency regarding municipal obligations and the utilisation of Equitable Share funds, as well as an immediate recovery plan to restore essential services and safeguard public assets. Residents of Maluti-a-Phofung deserve reliable electricity, clean water, functioning sanitation, and safe roads.
The DA will continue to hold the municipality accountable and fight for responsible leadership and improved service delivery.
Issued by Cllr. Ana Motaung - DA Councillor Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality
