South Africa recorded 856 new Covid-19 infections by Tuesday along with 194 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the confirmed death toll to 50 271.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of Tuesday, the country recorded a total of 1 514 815 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

The total number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol is 76 037.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 26.7% of the total confirmed cases, which translates to 405 035 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal has recorded 329 421 confirmed cases to date, the Western Cape 277 845 cases and the Eastern Cape 193 951 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most confirmed active cases with 9 456, followed by the Free State with 6 251 and the Western Cape with 5 930 cases.

The recovery rate is 94.6% and 1 433 320 recoveries have been recorded.

To date, 9 114 026 tests have been completed, with 23 753 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said on Tuesday.

Mkhize also reported a further 194 confirmed Covid-19-related deaths, of which 80 were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal, 43 in Gauteng, 29 in the Free State, 15 in Limpopo, 12 in the Western Cape, eight in the Eastern Cape and seven in the Northern Cape.

This brings the total to 50 271 confirmed deaths.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.
